What's so important about maintaining healthy teeth and gums?

One of the most important reasons to practice good oral hygiene is to prevent diseases of the mouth such as cavities and gum disease (periodontitis).

Cavities and gum disease

Cavities are caused by bacteria and can spread from tooth to tooth and from person to person. Cavities are commonly asymptomatic in early stage, with routine x-rays and exams the dentist can diagnose and restore the tooth before it causes a toothache and possible tooth loss. Scheduling routine professional cleanings with a dental hygienist will also prevent gum disease.

Nearly 80% of American adults have some sort of gum disease, most common is gingivitis, which is also asymptomatic in early stages of disease. Gum disease is an infection of the gums, which develops when bacteria builds up and multiplies between the teeth and gums then leads to irritation, inflammation and bleeding. If not treated, gingivitis can progress to more serious gum disease such as periodontitis in which the bone and ligaments around the tooth are destroyed and eventually leads to tooth loss. Periodontitis and cavities are almost entirely preventable with good oral hygiene.

Remember to be proactive about your oral health, be diligent about brushing in the morning and before bed for a minimum of 2 minutes.

Don't forget to floss once a day and visit the dentist twice a year for routine check-ups.
